LEGO SMART Play Sued for Patent Infringement by May Patents Ltd!

The LEGO Group are facing a lawsuit claiming that their SMART Play ecosystem infringes multiple patents!

Israeli firm May Patents Ltd. alleges that the LEGO SMART Brick and it’s SMART Charger infringes on 3 of its patents – 11,192,002, 12,095,277, and 12,288,992. These claim similar features are used including the accelerometer to produce an output signal and a visual display to give information to the user. May Patent Ltd. have also said that LEGO knew about the patents before releasing SMART Play and the initial wave of sets, which launched back in March.

It maybe worth noting that May Patents Ltd. is considered an NPE (Non-Practicing Entity) which is also known as ‘patent trolls‘ – these typically acquire patents, not to manufacture products, but to file lawsuits to acquire licensing fees and/or settlement payouts. May Patents Ltd. have previously filed lawsuits against Mattel, Amazon, and Microsoft.
